Our history
The Development and Environment Group (DEG) was established in 1995 to bring UK-based environment and development INGOs together on issues related to the interaction between poverty and the environment, to increase understanding between the two sectors, and to advocate towards the UK government on shared issues with one voice. Later, DEG became a Working Group of Bond, convening Bond members and non-members together.
On 4th May 2021, the Development and Environment Group (DEG) became Climate Action Network UK (CAN-UK), the UK Node of the global network Climate Action Network (CAN).
CAN-UK continues to bring together UK-based international development and environment organisations to collaborate, learn from each other, and advocate with one voice on international poverty-nature-climate issues towards the UK government and other relevant institutions. CAN-UK continues to work closely with Bond and other key partners in the UK, including Trade Justice Movement, The Climate Coalition, Make Polluters Pay, and others.
Becoming CAN-UK has strengthened the network, bringing benefits of working with colleagues around the world in the CAN network, and aligning the UK network in solidarity with those suffering injustices around the world.
CAN-UK:
- Unites the international development and environment sectors in the UK on international policy issues as the nexus of poverty, nature, and climate.
- Advocates for climate justice and sustainable development.
- Stands in solidarity with global civil society.
